The player who scored 50 on MJ and who Auerbach said his greatest mistake was not keeping him

Quite the superlatives in the title, but both are absolutely true. Earlier today we got you caught up with Celtics draft and stash draft pick Yam Madar, and for Flashback Friday, we'll cover another international player and go all the way back to 1979 Celtics draft pick Nikos Galis.

Galis averaged a whopping 28 points per game as a senior at Seton Hall during the 1978-79 season and Red drafted him with the Celtics 4th round pick in that draft. Galis suffered a severe ankle injury that preseason and the Celtics let him loose. Red Auerbach would later say his greatest mistake in his career was not keeping Galis.

The Celtics would attempt in future years to bring Galis over, but he refused since 1980's FIBA rules prevented NBA players from playing on their national teams. Galis would choose playing for Greece in national competitions over the fame of a NBA career.
