The Phoenix Suns and Greg Monroe have reached a buyout
Adrian Wojnarowski reports the Pheonix Suns and Greg Monroe have reached an agreement on a buyout, sending the big man to waivers:
The Phoenix Suns have agreed to a contract buyout with Greg Monroe, league sources tell ESPN.— Adrian Wojnarowski (@wojespn) February 1, 2018
The Celtics would be an ideal destination for Monroe given that his size, rebounding, and offensive presence around the rim would be great assets for the C's. His ability to play effectively off the bench would also let him slid right into Brad Stevens rotation. Monroe was averaging 11.8 points and 8 rebounds in 23.3 minutes a game in Phoenix after being dealt there in early November.
With the $8.4 million DPE still in their hands the C's would be able to outbid just about any other team for Monroe's services for the remainder of the season should they choose to. There's been a lot of speculation over the Celtics possibly acquiring Tyreke Evans of late, as the Memphis Grizzlies have made it abundantly clear their intention is to move him before next Thursday's trade deadline, but the C's could certainly court both players should they desire.
Look for the #Celtics to have interest in Greg Monroe, a definite post presence, can score around the rim and showed in MIL and PHX he can come off the bench. Also, would love to join winning situation.— gary washburn (@GwashburnGlobe) February 1, 2018
Grabbing Monroe with the DPE, without having to give up anything else, makes too much sense for Danny Ainge not to be on the phone with Greg's agent tonight. The C's need scoring off the bench and another big man, Monroe fills both those needs.
