76ers threatening to move to New Jersey

Ah a tale as old as time! Sports franchises threatening to move to squeeze tax payer money out of a city and its fans. The 76ers are next up on this dirty tactic train and are reportedly "seriously" considering moving to New Jersey

“We have worked tirelessly for the past five years to build an arena in Philadelphia, and negotiations remain ongoing with city leadership regarding our proposal at Market East. The reality is, we are running out of time to reach an agreement that will allow the 76ers to open our new home in time for the 2031-32 NBA season. As a result, we must take all potential options seriously, including this one.”

People are losing their minds over Philadelphia not having a basketball team, but the city borders the state of New Jersey. A Camden arena would not cause a name change (The team currently has their practice arena in Camden). Also we're talking about seven years from now.

The 76ers put this out to get the city of Philadelphia to cough up more money for them. That was the intent of this statement. And the city likely will, but if not for all intents and purposes things will be remain business as usual and Philadelphia's fans will still have a team. Their arena will just be on the other side of the Delaware River.

No need to clutch your pearls NBA fans. This is a big nothing burgercheese steak.

Update on the financials via ESPN:

New Jersey is offering up to $400 million in tax credits to the 76ers for a new stadium, while the team has been negotiating a $1.3 billion arena with the city of Philadelphia.
