High school career

As a Columbus Shaw High School senior under coach Terry White, Denson averaged 24.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 2.5 steals. His name was on the list of McDonald's All-Americans. He was also a first-team All-State selection as a senior. Against Liberty County in the 2010 Class AAA state tournament, Denson scored a game-high 38 points as a junior. As a freshman, he helped Shaw reach the Elite Eight, then the Sweet 16 as a sophomore, and then lost a heartbreaker as a junior in 2009 when the team finished 23-8.

Career in college

Denson played collegiately for the Auburn Tigers for four seasons. He was named All-SEC Honorable Mention by the Associated Press, All-SEC second team by the league coaches, and All-District by the NABC and USBWA. As a senior, he averaged 19.1 points per game. He was the first A.U. player since Keenan Carpenter in 1988-89 to score 25 or more points in four straight conference games (February 5-15). In addition, he made 176 of 268 free throws.
