Considering every team in the league picked up the third-year option on their 2018 rookies, the Boston Celtics picking up the option on Robert Williams came as no surprise. He’s a young, promising center that is getting a chance to earn minutes this year. The Celtics have hopes that Timelord can become a mainstay in their rotation.

Recap of 2020-21 rookie scale team options:— Keith Smith (@KeithSmithNBA) November 1, 2019
2018 draft class - All 30 players had their 3rd year option exercised. First time this has ever happened.
2017 draft class - 24 options exercised. 6 players did not have their options exercised or were previously waived/not signed.
Williams has only played in 36 career NBA games. His rookie year can be classified as mostly a redshirt season. So far this year, he is averaging 15 minutes per game and has already started a game. With the Celtics managing health in the frontcourt, it has been a good opportunity for Williams to play.
Some have compared Timelord’s ceiling to that of Houston’s Clint Capela. Capela averaged 7.0 points and 6.4 rebounds over 19.1 minutes per game in his second year, which would be a nice barometer for Williams. He had a really productive fifth season averaging 16.6 and 12.7. If Williams can approach those numbers, the Celtics would be cooking.
