Danny Ainge: "We'll fill those roster spots"

When the Celtics waived Varnado and Joseph, it served two purposes: Create flexibility with the roster and decrease the amount of luxury tax the team was paying. Well, it is not shocking to hear that the Celtics are going to fill those spots with players at some point, especially after the injuries to Rondo and Sullinger. Yet if you had any doubts, here it is confirmed by Ainge himself that there will be new signings.

“We’re going to need to fill those roster spots at some point,” he said. “It gives us flexibility for the time being. We will have a full roster eventually. I’ve always said it’s an opportunity league and a lot of players are biting at the bit for an opportunity.”

Sorry, man.
I listed a few possibilities even including Ben Wallace in my post yesterday (oh, and K-Mart is not happening), but especially with the teams inquiring about Jason Terry, Ainge might have a chance to look beyond free agents. We shall wait and see.

Oh, and on that thought, the Celtics are not giving up yet:

"We're not ready to cave in yet, are you kidding? It's going to take more than that," Ainge said just before Friday's game with the Magic at TD Garden. "We'll just have to win in a different way. Jared's our best rebounder. We don't have to play that way. Last two games, we played without Jared last game and I think our team looked great. The second half and most of the Miami game, we played smaller ball and were able to win. Against New York, they're a small-ball team, we played small against them, had a win against them in New York. "I think we're going to have to win in a different way without Jared and without Rajon. We'll see what we have."
