Some NBA and Celtic Vital Statistics Thru Three Weeks

After 21 days of play (thru Monday’s games), it’s been a head-scratching first 154 games of NBA play. The Spurs (+4, but 3-7) and Kings (+12, but 5-6), for instance, have out-scored their opposition overall, yet currently sport a sub-.500 record … while the Mavs (-23, but 7-4), Griz (-39, but 6-4) and Lakers (-9, but 6-5) have more productively arrived at the opposite incongruity.

Last season during the league’s abbreviated 72-game schedule, the average team attempted 21.8 Foul Shots per game, the second-lowest total in the Association’s 75 years (2017-18, 21.7 FTA’s per game).

A decade ago in 2010-11, the 24.4 per-game average for FTA’s was an all-time low … but the average has never been that high since.

And now, per-game FTA’s have dipped below 20.

At the same time, usage of the 3FG is through the roof, ever so slightly above 40 percent league-wide – no less than 18 teams are posting a 3PAr above .400.

Note re Calculation & Notation:

The number of “possessions” is an accurate count, not a formula-based estimated value. For purposes of clarity, the bracketed digit following the FT% is the exact count of “conversions” represented by those FTA’s.

“Possessions” calculation: FGA’s + FT conversions + TO’s – OR’s (including Team OR’s) – FT OR’s

“Conversions” calculation: FG’s + FT conversions

“Stripes” calculation: 3FG’s – missed FTA’s

TS% = True Shooting Percentage

PPP = Points per Possession

CV% = Conversion Percentage
