Grizzlies make cost cutting trade, sign 2 former Celtics

Real GM
The Memphis Grizzlies have agreed to trade Marreese Speights, Wayne Ellington, Josh Selby and a future draft pick to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Jon Leuer, according to a source.

The Grizzlies will save approximately $6 million with the trade, allowing management to avoid $4 million in luxury tax penalties.

The trade will allow the Grizzlies to keep Rudy Gay without tax penalties, but also bring more competitive offers.

The Memphis Grizzlies will sign Bill Walker, Delonte West and Sasha Vujacic following their cap clearing trade on Tuesday.

The pick the Cavs get has a guarantee on it (6-14), so it's a nice deal for the Cavs. Not to mention Ellington has value. The trade for the Grizzlies enables them to hold on to Rudy Gay and Zach Randolph presumably. The biggest name involved was not in the trade, but 2 time former Celtic, Delonte West. I assume all these guys were signed to the vet minimum, so you can always cut West if he has off the court issues. That said, I think you only sign him if you plan on playing him, so expect to see Delonte in the Grizzlies rotation moving forward (most likely taking the minutes Ellington was playing). I'm happy that he gets another chance to do what brings him peace in his life.
