ESPN reported the trade late last night, what held up the trade what KG's decision to waive his no-trade clause.
Given Garnett's current contract situation (he's a UFA after this season), it's probably a safe bet to say that this season, his 20th will be his last. Hard to see him returning to play for a non-contender in Minnesota.
This move is more likely step 1 in a long term plan to transition KG into a coaching/front office position with the Timberwolves where he will be able to mentor the team's young nucleus.
The Timberwolves reportedly want to sign KG to a 2-year extension.

KG is aware the Wolves want to do the extension. No doubt that factored into his decision to waive no trade— Jon Krawczynski (@APkrawczynski) February 19, 2015
