Former Indiana Hoosier Keith Smart will take over in time for media day. I used to like Nellie as a coach because his small ball style was fun to watch, but he started having way too many problems with players in recent years. This move probably should have been made a couple years ago. By the way, when I bitch about the Celtics being too lenient in their standards for retiring numbers, Nelson's career averages of 10.3 points per game and 4.9 rebounds per game stand out as a pretty good example.

What are Nelson's numbers with the Celtics?
http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/n/nelsodo01.html
Dino Radja averaged 16.7 ppg and 8.4 rpg in comparison fwiw.
If it's about numbers, Toine's jersey should be retired too:
20.6pts, 8.7 reb, 4.1 ast in 7+ seasons, not too shabby ;)
I agree with JR, there are way too many numbers retired...but hey, it is what it is :)
JR, i totally agree about the C's standards for retiring numbers. We've been way too lenient about it. Say what you will about the Lakers, but when they retire a player's number, it means something.
Hah, when exactly did Warriors become a contender? Or is it that with the frontcourt of Biedrins and Lee their play is not going to be high flying at all?
Just so you idiots know, he won 5 titles here with the Celtics. lmao @ comparing dino radja to don nelson SMH
Adam Morrison just won 2 titles. Doubt the Lakers are preparing to put his number up.
Another anonymous talking shit calling people "idiots." Nelson was a fine role player on a dynasty team, but was not some irreplaceable player. You act like he personally led the Celtics to those titles. As the winningest team in basketball we should have higher standards for the ultimate honor of retiring #'s. A guy like Nelson deserves a night upon retirement in his honor, not having his number retired imho.
And before you dog my man Dino (lol) I'm pretty sure if he played on the Cousy, Russell, Havlicek, Heinsohn, etc Celtics he'd have a few rings himself.
I agree 1000% with JR regarding Nelson. Solid player? Yes. Deserves his number retired? No.
