Ben Simmons reportedly unsure of future in NBA after rebuffing interest from Celtics and Knicks
While Simmons is not worthy of a contract anywhere near the max that he used to get, due to his unique playmaking skills for a player his size and defensive abilities, he should still be an NBA rotation piece, but that may not be happening. According to The New York Post's Stefan Bondy, Simmons has been "questioning whether he even wants to continue playing in the NBA next season.”
Mark Stein added this Monday that “Boston and New York, I'm told, expressed the most serious interest in Simmons this summer.” Simmons rebuffed that interest which included an offer from the Knicks which was probably the last straw that led to his agent Bernie Lee quitting his representation of the former All-Star.
It is unclear whether the Celtics made Simmons an offer to either play power forward or serve as a small ball center for this season's team, but there ceased being any smoke of Simmons coming to Boston as this summer wore on. At one point, the Celtics were listed as the favorite to land Simmons.
While the Celtics signing of Chris Boucher doesn't mean they couldn't also sign Simmons, it likely ended their pursuit. Due to Simmons' age I don't expect that he'll quit basketball entirely. Maybe he plays overseas for more money this season and returns to the NBA at some point.
