Memphis Grizzlies attach first round pick to dump Marcus Smart in trade with Wizards

While the Celtics were able to capture Banner 18 in Kristaps Porzingis first season in Boston, things haven't gone as well for the player traded for him, Marcus Smart. The Grizzlies have just cut ties with Smart attaching a first round pick in a trade with the Washington Wizards in order to move him. The Grizzlies in return will receive two 2nd round picks. Depending on the fine print and protections on what first round pick the Grizzlies are surrendering as well as if those two 2nd rounders are upcoming Wizards picks will determine how much of a dump this trade was. I was a fan of Marcus Smart while he was in Boston, but there was a loud segment of the Celtics fan base that treated him like a god, which was quite bizarre. Those fans were almost as upset with the Smart for Porzingis and picks trade in 2023 as Mavs fans are now over the Luka Doncic deal.

Memphis did seem on paper like a good fit for him and the Grizzlies, so one and a half years later, Marcus being dumped at the deadline is quite the turn of events. Who knows? Maybe Smart eventually ends up back in Boston. Stranger things have happened I suppose.

Smart could also use his time in Washington to rebuild his value some. The trade just occurred right now at the deadline, so no reports have come out yet on the Wizards' plans for Marcus.
