Italian Gigi Datome reportedly agrees to join the Pistons

In another case of "what could have been," Italian forward Gigi Datome has reportedly agreed to join Detroit.

The Celtics were said to be in hot pursuit of the Italian League MVP, but it looks like he decided to join a team that at least has some semblance of competing after signing Josh Smith to go along with their young bigs Andre Drummond and Greg Monroe. Datome also probably didn't want to wait for the Celtics to sort out their financial issues with the Kevin Garnett/Paul Pierce trade not becoming official until Wednesday as the Pistons have enough cap space to sign Datome whenever they want.

Datome would have been a nice piece who could have brought a scoring presence off the bench, spelling Jeff Green. It's always hard to predict how a Euro player's game will translate to the NBA, but with the Celtics in a rebuild, they would of had time to see what he brought to the table.

Oh well, on to the next one.
