Boston Celtics: third to last in the Eastern Conference?

This is the guy!!!!!!!!!!
This bit of news could have you fired up for a number of reasons.

Maybe you feel insulted, "The legendary Boston Celtics bringing it up the rear in the Eastern Conference? What is ESPN smoking?!"

Or maybe it's just the opposite, "Ridiculous! Our team is so bad we'll definitely get a better lottery pick than Charlotte and Philly!! What is ESPN smoking?!!"

No matter what your reaction, ESPN's Tom Haberstroh probably doesn't care.

While ranking the Eastern Conference, ESPN's Tom Haberstroh predicted the Celtics will finish 13th, ahead of only the Charlotte Bobcats (perennially terrible) and Philadelphia 76ers (trying their best to bottom out in hopes of building a nice future).

13. Boston Celtics (2012-13 finish: 7th)
As is, the Celtics figure to be in the running for not just the league's worst defense, but I struggle to see how they score enough to fight their way into the playoff picture. Remember, this was the 20th-ranked team in offensive efficiency last season, and that was with Pierce, Garnett, a healthy Rajon Rondo and Terry. Who's their No. 1 scoring option next season? Jeff Green? Yikes.

The expectation for your 2013-14 Celtics is that they will be God awful. Can they be this awful? Can they be even more awful?!

A lot of that depends on Rajon Rondo. Some think that the young point guard is talented enough to put this team on his back and carry them to at least the playoffs, no matter how terrible they are. However, we certainly didn't see much of that from him at the beginning of last year with Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce still on the roster. How will he fare when his top target is...I don't even know...himself, I guess?

The Boston Celtics have the capacity to be historically awful or surprisingly mediocre. What a fun little season we've got cooking.
