Jordan Mickey and James Young assigned to Maine Red Claws, briefly

After practicing with the Celtics on Tuesday, rookie PF Jordan Mickey and 2nd year SF James Young were assigned to Boston’s D-League affiliate Maine Red Claws. Young has been inactive for the first 3 games of the season and Mickey has only been active for one (in which he put on an MVP-like performance, sort of)

Are we giving up on the rookie sensation? Throwing in the towel on our sophomore sharp-shooter out of Kentucky!? Relax.

This makes total sense, as Brad Stevens and the coaching staff want these young players to get in as much work as possible, seeing as most game nights they will be in suits and ties. Steven’s adds more clarification.

If the two are assigned to play in Red Claws games this season, you can expect them to make some noise up in Portland. Based on Young’s performance last year, and Mickey’s summer league and preseason, they could be the best 1-2 punch the D-League has ever seen. However, I wouldn’t anticipate either getting comfortable:

Young and Mickey will likely be making the I-95 trip quite often this season. Or maybe they’ll fly? Either way. Barring injuries, this Celtics team is too deep to keep the pair in game shape if they are only wearing green and white.
