Marcus Smart comes in fifth for Rookie of the Year

To the surprise of no one, Andrew Wiggins was named Rookie of the Year Thursday.

Here's a breakdown of how the voting played out:

As you can see, Boston's own Marcus Smart came in fifth. Some die-hard Celtics fans may take exception with the low ranking, but it looks about right. Smart didn't have an amazing season. He had a pretty good one, as far as rookies go, but there's plenty of work he still needs to do. All of the players above Smart had much bigger impacts for their clubs this season and that's OK.

When Boston picked Smart, he wasn't expected to light the world on fire out of the gate. He had, and still has, facets of his game that need attention. The rebuilding process for the Celtics has been more of a marathon than a sprint and Smart epitomizes that. He'll get there and when he does, where he finished in Rookie of the Year voting won't matter much.
