Stevens: "We can get a lot better on the glass"

The Boston Celtics discovered a lot about themselves in the first preseason game against the Toronto Raptors on Monday night.

One thing they discovered is that this team has to work on hitting the glass and pulling down rebounds. Here is a quote from A. Sherrod Blakely's piece on CSNNE:

Upon further review, Celtics coach Brad Stevens came away with the same conclusion he had moments after Monday's loss to Toronto: The Celtics have to become a better team defensively. "Some of the things are correctable," Stevens said. "And we can get a lot better on the glass." The Raptors out-rebounded the Celtics 46-26, a big factor in Boston being on the short end of a 22-11 second-chance points differential. Without a true center other than rookie Vitor Faverani, the Celtics understand that they will have to get creative in their rebounding efforts. "We're just going to have to do it more by committee instead of individually," Stevens said.

It's no secret that getting out-rebounded by 20 against the Raptors is considered an issue. The whole team does need to do a better job on the boards collectively, but there are some individuals that are going to be relied upon to bring down rebounds.

Jared Sullinger did a pretty good job hauling in six boards in 20 minutes, but here are some individual numbers that must improve: Jeff Green - 1, Gerald "Crash" Wallace - 2, and Kris Humphries - 4.

The Celtics next test comes Wednesday night against a much better New York Knicks team.
