Reaction to the Bill Russell statue

For those of you who do not know, Boston will finally be unveiling a Bill Russell statue on November 1st. Baxter Holmes of the Boston Globe had a fantastic article about sculptor Ann Hirsch and her story behind creating the statue. Click here to read the full article.

Russell never pushed for this statue to be made, but he has accepted that it will be going up. Bill Russell is a humble man. In my mind this is FAR overdue. Magic is in front of the Staples Center... MJ soars in front of the United Center... Russell is the greatest winner in sports and played two decades before those guys! What took so long?

But hey, on November 1st the icon that should have been immortalized years ago will finally get his moment. It really felt good to see that Hirsch put so much time and effort into crafting the perfect representation of what Russell stands for. When I pictured the image in my head, I thought for sure Russell would be captured blocking a shot, but Hirsch sold me on the "teamwork" image of Russell making a chest pass.

Overall, I was very pleased to see the honor and pride that Hirsch took in her work, it makes the statue that much more special and a must see it person on opening night!
