New Mechanics: Getting a handle on Stevens' pick and roll

Head coach Brad Stevens is bringing a much different style of play to the Boston Celtics this year and as one would expect, it is a work in progress from how he handles the media to the plays he draws up in both practice and during game time.

Several players on the 2013-14 Celtics are experiencing growing pains with the style of pick-and-roll defense Stevens is aiming for. The desired effect is icing of the play and is designed to prevent the ballhandler from using the pick- an additional layer of protection for the Celtics' undersized team.

“There’s all kinds of different ways of looking at it. . . . It’s a good way, if we become very good at it,” Stevens said. “We just have to get better at it. It’s the right time of year to work on it..”
