This past offseason, there was some disagreement among Celtics management on the issue of Tyronn Lue. Some wanted to sign the 11-year veteran point guard as a free agent, but eventually the club gave the final roster spot to second-round draft pick Lester Hudson.
Yet they still want Lue around either to teach or as insurance. According to Lue, Boston was the only team he wanted to play for, which leads one to believe  he thinks there's a chance at some point this year he will be able to suit up for the Celtics.
“If I wasn’t going to play here, then I wasn’t going to play,” Lue said. “I’ve been sitting on this (offer from the Celtics) for about a month. I was going to just take some time off, but once you get away it can be hard to get back in. This is a great situation for me.”
The article also mentions the obvious, that Lue and KG are very good friends and that Lue helped convince KG to come to Boston. Doc has coached Lue in the past and asked him to come aboard his staff. A couple years ago I was intrigued with signing Lue, but after seeing him fall to the depths of like the Magic's fifth string point guard last year, I'm not so sure how much he can help. But let's say Rondo misses a week due to an injury (or an insubordination suspension...j/k Rajon), then you have a guy who can place hold (sort of like Dana Barros did a few years back) the point guard position. Judging by this picture from the Herald it looks like Lue has been building up a little Rasheed pouch, so hopefully he'll work out some himself just in case his numbered is called.

I think it's a very good signing by the C's. Lester will benefit from Lue's experience and if there is any injury during the year he will be able to suit up and give us 10 min in any game. After all, he is only 32. And if everything goes alright then Lue will just sit for the whole year helping our team and getting a ring. Nobody loses here. Go C's!

I also forgot if & when Tony Allen and Scalabrine get dealt at the deadline, this will open a roster spot...

  3. Great pick up, love this guy.

Good move, but I believe it would be against NBA regulation for Ty to suit up. C's would probably be under Stern's microscope if/when that ever happened

Pff, Stern doesn't know how to use a microscope!
