Report: Kings preparing offer for Marcus Smart after whiffing on LaVine

Having struck out in their efforts to sign Chicago Bulls Restricted Free Agent Zach LaVine, the Sacramento Kings are reportedly putting together an offer for Marcus Smart, according to NBC Boston's A. Sherrod Blakely.

There's far too many ifs involved right now to say for certain whether Smart fans should be worried about losing the defensive specialist, heading into his fifth NBA season, but one thing is certain:

The Kings are one of the few teams in the league with enough money to assemble an offer Boston may not be willing to match...and one of the few teams in the league so dysfunctional it may not matter.

It's crucial to keep in mind that until an offer has been tendered, this means very little. While Blakely's source may indeed be someone with access to the ongoing negotiations about Smart's next deal, they may also have skin in the game, and be trying to use the "threat" of such a deal as an attempt to regain leverage they have never had in the first place.
