Off the charts dumb I guess as he has just signed restricted free agent Rudy Gay to a max contract. Now Rudy Gay is a decent player, but certainly not a max guy, but that's not the reason why Chris Wallace is so dumb. Being that Gay was a restricted free agent, the Grizzlies could match any offer made to him and those offers also could not approach the $81.6 million he's getting, because of Bird rights rules. So Wallace had three options. He could sign Gay to a reasonable extension, he could could let him leave, or he could match any offer another team made (which again would have been significantly less than $81.6 million). Wallace somehow created a 4th option where he just decided to pretend Gay was unrestricted and offer him more. It's like going in to buy a used car and the sticker says 9,000. The dealer will totally sell it for 7,000 and then is floored when you offer 11,000. Amazing.

Well actually not all that amazing as this is the man who gave away Pau Gasol to the Lakers to save money only to use that money on serial head case Zach Randolph (He did get to ride in a parade though). Then this past year he signed Allen Iverson to be a backup guard for their team without ever mentioning that to AI, who adamantly refuses to be a reserve. He also offered high lottery picks Mayo and Thabeet to to Warriors for Monta Ellis (who the Warriors just want to get rid of for salary reasons) and turned down an offer of Al Jefferson for Zach Randolph. For more Chris Wallace awesomeness check out TB's column from back in the day.

By the way, he had decided to not sign Ronnie Brewer earlier and people thought that he was creating some cap space or whatever.

This is David Albridge's explanation: "The Grizzlies' decision came after owner Michael Heisley consulted with general manager Chris Wallace and other team officials. Memphis decided it made more sense to just pay Gay rather than wait for another team to come forth with an offer sheet that would have almost certainly included a front-loaded salary structure and signing bonus designed to make it harder for Memphis to match."

But then again, how hard would it be, really?

I said this earlier yesterday. Chris Wallace is a genius whose actions will never be understood by ordinary humans. Like, never.

(*Rocks ragging on each other*) "You're dumber than a box of Chris Wallaces!"

It's incredible that there's unemployed people out there with significantly more knowledge about the players & salary cap structure and this man has a job.

Thanks again for setting our Celtics back so far while you were GM, leaving, and then once we were slated to be back on top, giving away your best player to our most hated enemy, making it tougher to win championships. You are the lowest form of life and I hope you croak.

This max for Gay just adds to the Wallace legend.
I'm speechless. Makes the Wolves fans here in Sota feel better about the wrath of Kahn.

  8. ThomasJ says:

Kahn was ready to make a big run at Gay which showed his genius after the Wolves already added 3 small forwards on draft day.

Maybe Danny take advantage of Kahn's obsession with sf's by doing a sign and trade with Scal for Darko thus filling the need for a big white stiff and avoiding the ugliness of Brad Miller.

what was heisley thinking we could have gotten a great player now we are going to get killed.

Back to the article. My comment is that whoever wrote this doesn't have every fact. Pau Gasol would not play for Memphis. He complained non stop. Memphis was glad to see him go. That trade gave us Zach Randolph. Call him what you want but look at his numbers for the year. He also gave the city something to watch and cheer about. If it were not for Randolph the team would have fizzled out after Iverson left. That Gasol trade is still reaping benefits from this years trade. Report the whole story please.

  13. JR says:

Did Zach Randolph lead the Grizzlies to the playoffs this year? If he did I totally missed it.

  14. tb727 says:

Last Anonymous you couldn't be FURTHER from the truth. If Pau Gasol was in place of Randolph with Gay and Mayo that team would've won 50 games and been in the playoffs. Randolph had a good year but did he make an All NBA team or is he the best low post big man in the league? The answers are no and no.

Unless Grizzlies fans are content with missing the playoffs, that trade set you back bigtime. Wallace is a total imbecile and shouldn't be near an NBA front office.

Wallace now plays imbecile so that his real purpose remains undercover.
