Jahlil Okafor knocked out Celtics fan in street fight after loss

Video has surfaced of the Philadelphia 76ers first round rookie big man Jahlil Okafor punching out a Celtics fan after the 80-84 loss to Boston on Wednesday night. The fan was allegedly heckling Okafor according to ESPN’s John Goodman:

"Apparently, they said: 'The 76ers suck and you guys are all losers. You'll never win a game,' " a source close to Okafor told Goodman.

Words that minor probably wouldn’t bother your typical NBA player, unless you consider those words to actually have some validity. Now the “you guys are all losers” seems unfair, Okafor was a national champion at Duke, and prior to the 0-16 start to his NBA career, I doubt he’s lost 16 games his entire life!

However, the “You’ll never win a game” might have struck a nerve. It’s no secret that this season’s Philadelphia 76ers could be the worst NBA team ever constructed. This of course is done purposefully by Philly GM Sam Hinkie to secure higher draft picks. But Okafor has seemed visibly frustrated recently by this strategy, especially in narrow losses like the one in Boston two nights ago. A game in which the 76ers controlled for much of until a complete collapse in the final 6 minutes, where Okafor made the only 3 points for his team.

At this point, no charges have been made and the NBA has not issued any fines or suspensions. Via ESPN.com:

Boston police say they do not plan to investigate an apparent scuffle involving Philadelphia 76ers center Jahlil Okafor unless someone involved comes forward to say they were the victim of a crime.

The article also mentions that the 76ers released a statement claiming they were gathering more information along with the NBA and looking into the matter.

If we can take one thing from this incident, it seems unlikely the 6’11” PF/C will be looking Boston’s way when he becomes a free agent.
