Rajon Rondo cleared for full contact in practice; a January return seems likely

Really good news out of Celtics practice today, where we learned that Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo has been cleared for full contact. This is a huge step, and in many ways the last major hurdle in the recovery from ACL surgery. The news was broken by a slew of Celtics beat guys at practice, including Chris Forsberg and Jay King.

It's silly to guess exactly when Rondo will return (just ask Bulls fans how that worked out for them last year), but all signs point to Rondo coming back at some point in January.

The Celtics play six of their first seven games of January on the road, including a brutal five game road trip to Oklahoma City, Denver, LA (Clippers), Golden State and Portland starting January 5th. For those hopping aboard the "Celtics playoff express"..that would be a crucial stretch to have Rondo back for.

But for now, we wait. However, today was a big step forward for Rondo and his recovery. Being cleared for full contact allows him to run through picks, take contact at the rim and possibly begin playing 5-on-5 in practice. Which hopefully will give him full confidence in his reconstructed knee.
