Rajon Rondo to Rudy Gay: "We need you over here."

Rudy Gay has been the subject of many trade speculations recently, including some that linked him to the Celtics. It turns out that there might potentially be some substance to those.

When it comes to luring players to Boston, you cannot say "Oh we have great weather, low tax rates and and awesome media scene." I mean you could, but that would be lying. Thus the Celtics are left with a professionally run organization (which means a lot if you look around), a player's coach and a great franchise player for whom the sky is still the limit. Of course he's going to pitch the idea to his friends, especially when they want to talk to him for advice.
Whether it’s close friend Rajon Rondo, Jarrett Jack, or other basketball colleagues, Memphis Grizzlies forward Rudy Gay has been leaning on his circle of NBA friends to get him through recent trade speculation.

While Rondo, according to Gay, is giving sound advice, the Boston Celtics guard can’t help being a little selfish.

“It’s hard to talk to [Rondo] because he is always saying, ‘We need you over here. We need you over here,’ ” Gay said. “So it’s not easy talking to him. But he’s being a friend, just telling me about keeping everything together and he makes you feel like you are still valuable.”

To be clear, that Rondo says "We need you over here" doesn't mean that he is 100% positive on that. It might be an effort to comfort a player who has had his fair share of such rumors. It might be Rondo's way to make Gay valuable as he himself puts it. This is Rondo. He is famous for his deadpan. For several months (or years maybe) people thought he'd release a rap album. You never know it with him.

Yet if management shares Rondo's opinion, we might be one step ahead of the potential competition in this case.
