Heading North - Celts assign Melo and Joseph to Red Claws

In a move that surprises just about no one, the Celts have sent C Fab Melo and F Kris Joseph to their NBDL affiliate, the Maine Red Claws. Melo, a raw big man out of Syracuse, had yet to appear in any of the C's seven games this season. While Joseph, a somewhat more polished forward, had played a whopping 2:36 thus far.

Melo (13) and Joseph (43) are heading to Maine to work on their games
This is the exact situation that the NBDL exists for, a chance for players who are blocked at the NBA level to get a chance to work on their games without collecting DNP-CD's and wearing expensive suits on the end of the bench.

With KG, Brandon Bass, Jared Sullinger and Chris Wilcox all in the rotation, and veterans Jason Collins and Darko Milicic there in a "in case of emergency - break glass" role, Melo was not about to get any reps for the C's. Heading a few hours up 95 will allow him to play a ton of minutes and work on his game. Same goes with Joseph.

Thankfully for these guys they are used to spending winters in Syracuse, so they shouldn't find themselves too bored up in Portland.

Well, maybe.
