Draft Profile: Charles Jenkins

According to our friends over at Draft Express.com Charles Jenkins is or should be on the radar of the Boston Celtics with the 25th overall pick in the first round of this year's draft.

So who is this guy?

In short Jenkins is a 6'3", 220 lb combo guard out of Hofstra University who will likely be regulated to the point guard position should he stick in the league. He averaged an eye popping 22.6 points which was the 6th highest scoring average in the nation. Throw in 4.8 assists, 3.8 rebounds and 1.7 steals and you have quite a player.

Comparisons range from Randy Foye to O.J. Mayo on the type of player Jenkins would translate to in the league. I will throw another name out there and say he reminds me of Will Bynum of the Detroit Pistons due to his slightly diminutive size with above average play making ability.

His strengths are his shooting and high basketball IQ. He enters the draft as a senior and is a mature guard with experience. He doesn't force shots and scores within the flow of the offense, which is made easier cause he typically has the ball the majority of the time. With averages of 51% from the floor, 42% from three, and 82% from the free throw line he was one of the most efficient players in the NCAA this past season. The form on his shot is outstanding and he seems to square himself up nicely off the dribble. The only flaw I see in his shot is that it is a little slow on the draw.

The knock on Jenkins is his size, speed, and the level of competition he played against in the lesser known Colonial Athletic Conference. Jenkins is not lightning fast nor will he be leap frogging the heads of potential defenders a la Vince Carter over Fredrick Weiss. At 6'3" he is to small to defend most shooting guards and his lack of speed will expose him against the better NBA point guards.

Is he really good or are his stellar number across the board a product of a weak conference?

Jenkins discusses some of those topics and more:

The Celtics have numerous needs and bench scoring is amongst the greatest of them. But with Avery Bradley still in the mix and all signs pointing to the re-signing of Delonte West, the selection of Jenkins would almost seem like overkill. Or a lack of trust in Bradley.

Some mock drafts have Jenkins falling into the second round and one or two mock drafts don't have him being drafted at all. While I don't think he will go undrafted, Boston would be wise to pass on Jenkins here and select a scoring "big" who can rebound. If Jenkins is still around at 55 when the Celtics pick again in the second round, well then I would consider that a steal.
