RealGM
Celtics general manager Danny Ainge has admitted that he has doubts about Paul Pierce's future with the team.

"I do have doubts," Ainge told WEEI in Boston. "I'm not certain what Paul will do. He may be able to get a long-term contract somewhere else."
If you're a casual Celtics fan you probably see no reason why Danny Ainge should not resign Paul Pierce or Ray Allen. Why would you let them leave? And in a world without big contracts, salary caps, and luxury tax it would be a no brainer to retain them. Hey I want them back too, but giving inflated dollars and years to mid to late 30's basketball players could be a recipe for disaster. Ainge has said that the team overachieved this past season. With an older Big 3, no Rasheed and no Perkins how can one realistically bet on the Celtics winning in 2010/2011? Yes the diehard fan in us always has hope, but that's just the fan in us.

Truth is I believe we'd be champions right now if not for the Perkins injury. Help injured sports players with these sports medicine schools. It would have been one of the most remarkable stories in decades and would have cemented Doc's place in history. Rondo, Perkins, and Baby had improved enough in two years to offset the decline of the Big 3. The Big 3 are not your 2008 Big 3. If Pierce plays like he did in the 2008 Finals we're probably champions. Same for Ray and KG. They all have lost something and its imperative not to overpay them for past glory and sentimental reasons. KG is already overpaid so nothing we can do about that. If Ray and Pierce really want to finish their careers in Boston they should accept fair contracts that won't handicap the Celtics for years to come. If they want big bucks we could be in major trouble.

There are so many teams out there with money to spend that there will be overpaying GM's out there. But be careful what you wish for. At times this year's regular season got ugly. It will only get worse as the Big 3 get older and get outplayed by players making a quarter of their salaries. It's the sad truth about getting old. Yahoo fans will boo the Celtics saying they're not giving forth effort, but the truth will be they just won't have the ability any more. So while casual fans might rejoice if we sign Ray to a 4 yr/35 million dollar deal or Pierce to a 5 yr/70 million dollar deal, contracts like those would kill the Celtics for the next 5 years. Ainge seems somewhat aware of this, so Ray could be on his way out (as has been speculated), but don't be shocked if Pierce decides to cash in AND go to a better situation to win this July.

I'm pretty sure DA has to say that to avoid tampering issues. I can't see PP go play somewhere else.

  2. Karl says:

Very interesting. Tough decision. We definitely can't sign those two for the max. They aren't superstars anymore and can't bring it every night. At the same time, if everything goes perfectly we could have another shot at the title. Danny has a tough choice ahead.

You're right, we cant sign veterans for a max salary. However, Paul Pierce has been the face of the Celtics franchise for years and its most recognizable figure since Bird, while I dont know about Ray, I think Pierce should be brought back...no matter what the price, because the Truth is priceless to boston

Why don't you guys move on and just accept the fact that the best team win. Don't make any excuses. Lose with dignity and don't say congrats to Lakers if you are going to follow your praise with but... Its like saying I'm sorry BUT its your fault...

The best team DID NOT win. Boston controlled the game and in the end it was the Perkins injury that affected everyone else. LA was lucky...plain and simple.

  6. BRADinLA says:

Yeah, don't want to turn this into a back and forth but you baited me into it. We lost because Rasheed had nothing left in the tank. We had built more than enough of a lead to withstand a rally by the Lakers. What killed us was the Laker's offensive rebounding, the main skill of their big men. If Perkins was in he would have played his heart out and stopped enough of that for us to eek out the win. If Kobe had played out of his mind then, yes, I would agree. But we shut him down. You clearly won because of your bigs. If Perkins is in even those backbreaking threes from Artest and Fisher don't win the game for you.

No, the better team did not win.

This could be a blessing in disguise...Celtics need youth. And personally I'd take Ray's ageless game over Pierce. Him and Rondo clearly arent on the same page at all and I'm sure he wants his bankroll. He can go to LA and have a pretty decent team there. Of course he's not even a #1 priority for ANY team in free agency. Rudy Gay comes before him.

  8. Anonymous says:

Of course Pierce is the face of the Celtics so it'll hurt but KG is the man

keep paul and ray they are part of the team dont rip the team apart that would be the worse thing you could do ,we need them still go celtics

I think that DA is realy thinking about this and as for PP and RA they will sign back with the Celtics they are just exporing options right know. Who won't sign them back I mean they are both forth front of the Celtics and PP is the Caption of the C's so you would want to loose him either. and RA is the Sharp shooter but I understand the Salery cap for the C's too and the age of them

If we have to pay the max then we should get someone worth the max. Its not Ray Allen There are 6 btter than he. So you get one and keep pierce and youa re back in the hunt. Dirk, Wade, Bosh, Johnson are all worth the Max against any of the big 3 Ray and Pierce cant play with these 4 not all season and not in the playoffs

  12. Anonymous says:

RA is not a go to sharp shooter anymore. Niether is Pierce, If we had one of them for either Pierce or Allne in game six we win without Perkins

For some reason all you boston fans didnt say anything in 2008 when Bynum was out.....so is it fair to say you got lucky in 08? so yeah this year it was perkins ,u know how it feels like :)

  14. Ron Artesticle says:

For some reason Celtics fans are such losers to spend time on Lakers sites. It's hilarious how many Lakers fans are on Celtics sites. I guess they long to be a part of a real fan base. With Perkins we're champions and Lakers fans wouldn't even be talking about their team. Frontrunning, bandwagoning dickwads you Laker trolls are.

  15. sonya says:

hey anonymous, you guys got blown the fuck out in 08, you lost in a GAME 6 by like 39 points. we lost in a game 7, losing by a humongous margin on the rebounds and free throws only by 4 points at the end. i think the addition of our starting center might have helped our situation. can't say the same for you, idiot.

Everybody keeps saying, "If Perkins was in." If perkins was in Wallace would not have given the Celtics that comfy lead in the first half because he would have been on the bench. The rason things unfolded the way they did is because Boston had a more offensive team in. All year long Rivers stressed how important it was to rest his guys. Thats what lead to a 500 record. The Celtics werent all that impressive all season long. What I saw was a team that made a lucky run and is now falling apart. Lucky or not that the Lakers won, the trophey is in L.A. As a Laker fan I hope Boston stays competitive. Its better for the league and I love the rivalry.

Rasheed and kg were gassed in the 2nd half bc they had to play moremins than their bodies allowed. Thus they couldn'thold on to the lead. With perk it wouldn't have been an issue.

Offensive Rebounds in the first quarter made the difference between a 9point lead and and not 20!
Score was 18-12 when Perk went out. LA missed nearly every shot they took during the 1st quarter.
2nd chance points ensured Celtics didnt win like 2008.
Bynum didnt make a difference in 2008 reg season games. Boston by 13 and 19 in LA.
LA had months in planning to play without Bynum.
Perk was lost in an 18-12 game and Boston had to go 2 days later.
LA with homecourt were very fortunate to win that game.
Laker fan do you really believe LA couldve made it that close if Boston had homecourt?

  19. Anonymous says:

    Yeah, it's a great one-sided rivalry!
    9-3 Boston leads all-time!

please please please!!!! dont let ray or pierce leave..we need them if we wanna win a championship....we need that team together like a family to need we really do.....so dont let them leave please!!!!! dont kill the family they have

Back to Back Boston and a three peat earlier in the decade. LA is the champion . . . . .get used to it.

  22. Patrick says:

This is a very unselfish move by Pierce, I am frankly surprised. To take that kind of paycut, Boston must have told him what was their plan. Boston should be on the market for another scorer. Avery Bradley is a decent pick, he will be a great backup and share time with Tony Allen and N. Robinson.

They should pickup Stackhouse! Only $400k. He is better than Scalabrine. Kyle Corver might be a nice move too. Richard Jefferson might be a good pickup too, because of his defense. Hell, sign Tracy McGrady for cheap; the risk v. reward is worth it.

Al Harrington isn't looking that bad either. Also grab Earl Barron for some length. Aaron Gray or Jonathan Barron are some young length too.

    DROP: Scal, Sheldon, Finley, Wallace,

RESIGN: Pierce, R. Allen and T. Allen, Robinson(great spark and could become a good backup for Rondo), Daniels(but for less), keep their 2 D-league players(Lafayette,Ga ffney) cheap

NEEDS: I think they need more length to be able to adequately rest KG. They also need another scorer. Pickup 2 young(ish) big guys with potential and another scorer. Stackhouse or McGrady wouldn't be a bad bet if you could get them cheap.

Since Pierce and Allen are taking less money to allow for another one to possibly fit, this roster could have some potential.
