Quantcast

You how they say what older players lose in athleticism they make up in smarts? Well Rasheed Wallace has lost a ton of athleticism, but is playing dumber than ever...or at least as dumb. And since he no longer is in shape or a dominant force the poor decisions are more glaring in my opinion. I tried to give him time, but its past the halfway mark of the season and Wallace needs to sit. Plant yourself on the bench and watch Glen Davis or Shelden play. Or better yet, watch Perkins play more minutes. You know the guy who had 12 rebounds in 23 minutes last night, but was benched in favor of you Mr. Wallace for the entire 4th quarter. In 26 minutes, Wallace had 2 rebounds. Hard to get rebounds though when you have a big old gut and on offense you spend 95% of the game camped out at that three point line as if you were a good shooter and weren't 7 feet tall.

If 'Sheed must play (so Danny doesn't look bad for signing him) then the moment he shoots a 3, he should be subbed for. Simple as that. Josh Smith on the Hawks, you know the team that just swept you 'Sheed? Well he's more than a decade younger than you and he learned that he needs to stop gunning from the 3 point line. He has shot as many as 152 threes in a year. Want to know how many he has attempted this year? 3. And my guess is they were all at the end of quarters or at the shot clock buzzer. So I don't buy the whole "Well this is how he's always been. He's not going to change" argument. No this isn't how he's always been. He used to be a more athletic, better rebounding force. Now he's old and he needs to change.  When you're putting up the numbers, people can live with some dumb choices. 'Sheed does't have that liberty any more. But he doesn't have to change; he can sit on the bench.
Time to show some tough love and not just show favoritism to the vets Doc. And by the way, Perk has been in the league long enough that he's a young veteran and shouldn't  be benched like that. This team is in dire need of rebounders and I watch Wallace play over Perk, Shelden sit on the pine, and Powe prepare for his comeback with the Cavs. Rasheed watches it too. All alone behind the three point line. There's a reason you have so many open looks buddy. It's the same reason teams were leaving Josh Smith open there. They'd much rather have you shooting a three than posting up, drawing fouls, and being in position for offensive rebounds. You shoot 5 threes in 24 minutes a game. You shoot threes at a rate 50% higher than Ray Allen even. You're a horrendous chucker and Doc needs to send you to the pine. But then he'll get in even worse shape. Another bogus argument. Meet a stairmaster Rasheed. Ask it out and spend some quality time. Right now you suck and you need to sit. Learn to stay inside the arc and you can regain some minutes. Glen Davis has to fight for minutes and personally I think punching someone in the face standing up for your girl is less dumb then launching threes at the rate this out of shape 7 footer is. If necessary, I'll mail the Garden a CelticsLife seat cushion for your crazy ass.

  1. Amen! So true, I agree with everything said but sadly know it will continue.

Rasheed doing his best for the team.. so whats the prob there? He didnt want to lose either so shut the crap out.. we have to put all our faith on them.. and pray for the team.. THAS ALL!

I cant stand watching Rasheed shoot all those 3 point shots. We need a rebounder. I miss Powe.

  4. ThomasJ says:

I'm sure Rasheed really wants to win, but is he willing to do the hard work at this point in his career?

Playing physical inside, heads up team D (more than contesting shots by his man) and the 3 pointer should be the infrequent occurance when a Dwight or Shaq doesn't want to leave the paint, not a regular option.

Rasheed brings much better spacing offensively than Perkins. There's no doubt about it. His contributions while minimal to this point will be vital moving forward.

When the playoffs arrive and it's all about matchups I think he's going to be an essential part to the success of this team. People say the Celts go how Rondo goes? I believe they'll go as Sheed goes come playoff time.

No need to throw Sheed under the proverbial bus yet. I still think the best is yet to come for him.

  6. JR says:

    You nailed it ThomasJ.

TB, not so much. lol. Hopefully he can be solid come playoff time. Hopefully by then enough splinters on the bench will force him to play to his strengths. I don't remember PJ Brown chucking 8 threes a game.

Right now we need someone who can get a rebound more than miss 8 threes. Brad Lohaus gave us spacing.

And Sheed can space the floor without shooting 3's. KG does. Or shooting a lot less threes. No reason he should be shooting more than 50% more threes than Ray Allen... "And you know this, man."

  7. tb727 says:

PJ Brown wasn't a 3 point shooter- he didn't have that range. Rasheed does. It's funny how no one complains when he hits them.

I understand he hasn't been making a good percentage and he is taking too many. Would you prefer if he dribbled in and took a long 2? Then he could be like a big version of Eddie House.

Anyone who doesn't recognize what Rasheed brings to this team doesn't know basketball. He's a long, exceptional interior defender who would give Gasol and Bynum fits over a 7 game series. When the Celtics absolutely need a basket he needs to be on the floor over Perkins.

Is he as good as he was 5 years ago? Certainly not. But I still think he was the best acquisition to get and still fits in the scheme of things as far as being the guy needed to go as far as this team can.

Everyone should lay off him. Let's talk about how Rondo can't shoot from beyond 8 feet. That's more worthy of a discussion.

  8. JR says:

"Anyone who doesn't recognize what Rasheed brings to this team doesn't know basketball." You need to watch more of 'Sheed's chucking and less animal planet. And if you're in the chat trust me people don't get giddy when he hits a 3. Most of us moan that oh no here comes three more attempts. In fact just that happened after he hit one yesterday in the 2nd half. He then went on to continue missing (3 of them). C's totally had gotten back in the game and everytime 'Sheed misses its deflating.

Extra bonus to the opposing team is that they don't have to keep people back to rebound when Sheed and KG are on the floor together. They can send their guys running on the break, b/c we have no one to crash the offensive glass. That's where we miss Powe.

Without Rondo this year, this team would be awful. 'Sheed should try not shooting from beyond 8 feet. 'Sheed should try offensive rebounding like Rondo. Rondo has 66% more offensive rebounds and more rebounds in total.

I know you heart 'Sheed b/c of your prediction, but he's been lousy and he needs some time on the bench to think about his game. Perk, Davis, and Williams are more than capable of playing more minutes.

  9. tb727 says:

If Rondo's an All Star he should be DOMINATING Nelson and especially Bibby- he did nothing of the sort. I love when he's like 10 feet from the basket and doesn't even look to shoot. Then a 3 second call or bad shot ensues. I love end of quarter situations when he has the ball in his hands and keeps dribbling and dribbling and teams are playing way off him and then he has to force a shot.

Rasheed is a bench player. No way the onus of the team playing poorly should be squarely on him. Nor should there be a shot in hell of Davis or Williams getting any playing time ahead of him- they can't shine his shoes.

  10. JR says:

Davis played better in the playoffs than 'Sheed has this year. 'Sheed is getting paid more this year than Rondo. Rondo has been our best player. If you're saying that Rono shouldn't be an all-star then we shouldn't have any I guess. The players and coaches all agree that Rondo has been the leader. I don't think anyone put all the blame for the Celtics season on Rasheed. The main reason we're playing poorly is age and injuries. You can't do anything about that. You can do something about going inside and stop chucking. Josh Smith has and the Hawks are better for it. Some time on the bench is needed for Wallace.

I'm puzzled by the fact that you preferred Wallace and his two rebounds and chucking in the game over Perk and his 12 rebounds and inside force. Rasheed has been a dud. One hopes that he will learn his lesson like Josh Smith and actually be worth his contract in the playoffs.

The whole argument that Rasheed is good because Rondo doesn't take jumpers makes no sense.

And you're right Rasheed is a bench player, so ghe should not be playing more than the starter Kendrick Perkins, who is a borderline all-star quality true center and he definitely should be a bench player in the 4th quarter. ie on the bench.

  11. ThomasJ says:

I've been waiting all year for 'Sheed to shoot more than 40% from 3 and it's not happening.

30% 3 pt shooters are a last option!!! Not guys who shoot early in the shot clock in key situations.

Doc needs to end this greenlight for the good of the team. 'Sheed should be shooting from the same range as KG with the occasional 3 if the situation warrents it.
